History
Founding and Early Years
The roots of our history can be traced back to 1960 when a group of dedicated individuals recognized the need for affordable healthcare in the Morristown area. Dr. Bob Spiegel, a psychiatrist, and Dr. Jack McConnell, a family physician, joined forces with community leaders to establish a comprehensive mental health center.
In June 1960, the Mental Health Center of Morristown opened its doors in Morristown, Tennessee. Initially, it served as a mental health clinic, offering psychiatric, therapy, and case management services to those in need. In 1971, the organization changed its name to Cherokee Guidance Center to identify its proximity to Cherokee Lake which encompassed its then five-county service area. Over time, the organization expanded its scope to include primary care services, recognizing the importance of addressing physical health alongside mental health. In 1993, the name became Cherokee Health Systems, which remained as the name until June 2025, when leaders rebranded to River Valley Health.
Growth and Expansion
As the demand for their services grew, what is now known as River Valley Health, formerly Cherokee Health Systems, expanded its reach and opened additional clinics throughout Knoxville and surrounding East Tennessee counties. The organization adopted an innovative approach known at the time as an "Integrated Health Care Home" model, which integrates primary care, behavioral health, and substance use disorder treatment under one roof. This approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive and coordinated care to address their unique needs.
RVH also prioritizes community engagement and collaboration. The organization works closely with local schools, community centers, and other healthcare providers to promote preventive care, education, and outreach programs. By partnering with various stakeholders, RVH strives to improve the overall health outcomes of the communities it serves.
Recognition and Impact
Over the years, RVH received national recognition for its innovative and patient-centered approach to healthcare. The organization has been a pioneer in the integration of behavioral health and primary care, demonstrating the effectiveness of this model in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
Today, River Valley Health continues to be a trusted provider of healthcare services in East Tennessee. With a dedicated team of healthcare professionals and a commitment to holistic care, the organization strives to create healthier and thriving communities.
